Title: Nakomo heroes – character concepts

Nakomo is a JRPG IP designed to appeal to the Japanese, Chinese, and American markets. As such the style is between manga and American comic art. It has Western and Eastern influences. Hair styles and colour, clothing design and accoutrements, and weapon selection and design were all carefully selected after much discussion and iteration. The young heroes wear a uniform that is a cross between karategi, shaolin kung fu robes, and kung fu uniform. The adult heroes feature a Tanuki with traditional Japanese calabash and Chinese influenced staff and beaded necklace. Matsu’s hair is more off the face than traditional manga style, and Aki has short hair on one side to be relate-able in the Chinese market. The heroes are Take, Matsu, and Aki in Japan and America; Talulu, Matt, and Lina in China (for ease of pronunciation and cultural fit).

In The Snow.

This is a short story about a young boy’s adventures on a snowy day with his dog, and the real life drama he gets confronted with.

I started working on this little story during some downtime over Christmas 2016, and picked up again after some life transitions in February 2017, and found it a great source of solace and something to come home and work on during long nights.

The basic theme I wanted to get across was the idea that we all have to pass through something tough, something we don’t want to face, to get to something better, to get to where we really need to be (that, and I also love drawing snow!).

‘ISIS DELAWARE’ is an abstract work that explores the dichotomous relationship between automation and humanity. Created using a combination of algorithms and diaristic cut-ups, this digital stream-of-consciousness aims to answer the very human question: ‘What does it look like when the Internet dreams of itself?’

The kapre (kah-prey) of pre-colonial Philippine mythology is a huge docile tree-dwelling black spirit usually content to observe life from high up in the branches of its tree home. Sometimes, a kapre can fall in love with a human and will follow that person throughout their lifetime.

When Spain colonised the Philippines, they brought with them some African slaves who escaped into the forest. This prompted the Spaniards to bastardise the mythology of the kapre, making them evil and resembling these slaves, so that Filipinos will be scared of going to the forest to offer help.

This comic is inspired by all these things.

Home & Home is an autobiographical comic exploration of mixed heritage. The story explores the complicated and layered feelings of being from somewhere, but not really, no matter where you are. While Japanese by heritage, I’m also from New Zealand first and foremost. That changes how much access I have to my heritage, and how I express it. Through Home & Home I hope to connect with others who are from than one place, and to share with people some of the beauty, subtletly and difficulty those of us with mixed heritage experience.

Pizza Sneakers is a new offering from myself. The only artistic aim was to tell fun short stories that I thought would be fun to draw, and hopefully fun to read. None of the stories relate to each other in any way other than that they are made by me. However I was surprised at the journey each story took me through, as I research a lot before I start drawing. With each topic being quite different it was fun to learn about new things as I explored these new comics. Soon I will put them online to read for free but I thought it would be great to debut the first few stories in a collected book at Chromacon. This is the first time I have splashed out and printed a colour comic as well. I’m very happy with the result.

Tales of the Star-Knights: The Newark Encounter

The Newark Encounter tells the tale of a band of Star-Knights as they work together to thwart the evil wizard Salazar. A celebration of the camp, pulpy style of storytelling that was prevalent in the Silver Age of comic books, Tales of the Star-Knights relishes in being a bombastic and grandiose adventure from beginning to end.

Similar to those old fairy story about a shining armour saved a damsel in distress. My story is in funny way and show the way to start narrating a tale through comic style.
