Toby Morris: Journey to Creative Independence and Comics for Change

Toby Morris is an Auckland based cartoonist, illustrator and comic artist, best known for his regular non-fiction comic The Pencilsword (serialised on ‘The Wireless NZ’) and his cartoons for RNZ as well as posters and covers for the likes of The Phoenix Foundation, Liam Finn, Beastwars, and A Low Hum.

 

Join Toby for a fireside chat hosted by Kiwi comics legend Dylan Horrocks as he shares his creative journey from developing his craft to quitting the day job and pursuing an independent artistic career full-time.

Toby will give his personal insights into his life as an father, illustrator, cartoonist, comic artist and using comics as a medium for accessible journalism, social advocacy and raising awareness of important social issues.

 

The session will end with 15 mins of open Q&A.

 

About Toby Morris:

 

Toby Morris is an Auckland based cartoonist, illustrator and comic artist, best known for his regular non-fiction comic The Pencilsword and his cartoons for RNZ.

 

Toby drew, published and distributed his first comic at the age of 13 and since then has drawn two books, over twenty comics and worked extensively within the New Zealand music industry, drawing posters and covers for the likes of The Phoenix Foundation, Liam Finn, Beastwars, and A Low Hum.

 

He is a former member of the band Batrider, former editor and publisher of Officer Pup, former artist and writer of the comic series Pirate Technics. He illustrates for magazines like Metro, loves making gig posters and is the author and illustrator of books like Don’t Puke on Your Dad and the recently released kids books Capsicum Capsi Go, and The Day The Costumes Stuck.
